Please note that by default test names are presented in alphabetical order by RCPA Preferred Term, marked by (P), with each followed by its RCPA Synonyms, marked by (S). This necessarily means that if both the preferred terms and the synonyms checkboxes are checked then the list no longer appears to be sorted in any perceivable order. This also necessarily means that Synonyms do not appear to be in alphabetical order when the Preferred Terms checkbox is unchecked. Synonyms appear in the order in which they are displayed if their corresponding Preferred Terms were in the list, that is they are grouped by the "invisible" preferred term.
Checkboxes can be used to filter the list of Orderable Tests so that it includes only the the RCPA Preferred Terms or only the RCPA Synonyms or both if both checkboxes are checked. At least one must be checked. If an attempt is made to uncheck both checkboxes then the RCPA Preferred Terms will be checked.
The "Discipline" dropdown menu is available to filter the list of tests to only those which belong to the selected Discipline. Tests which do not belong to the selected Discipline will be removed form the list.
Enter a part or all of the test's name, or at least the first 4 digits of the SNOMED code into the filter text box to filter the list to these names that contain the filter text as a rcpa preferred term, one of the rcpa synonyms or the SNOMED code (punctuation characters are ignored). Leading (P) in front of the test name means the name is the RCPA Preferred Term. Leading (S) means the name is the RCPA Synonym. Do not bother including the leading (P) or (S) when entering text into the name filter as it will be ignored. This filer is applied in addition to any other filters, such as checkboxes or the discipline selection.
Click on the test name to display the details of the selected test as defined in the appropriate RCPA SPIA for e-Requesting Terminology Set.
The terms of the National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) - Requirements for information communication and reporting (Fifth Edition) (NPAAC RICR5) document oblige pathology laboratories to conform to the expectations of the standards defined therein, which include the use of the RCPA SPIA-defined clinical codes and terms for use inm reporting of pathology results in Australia.
The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Standardised Pathology Informatics in Australia (SPIA), Guidelines, v4.0, articulate RCPA's expectations with respect to ordering and reporting pathology in Australia.
The application now supports the ADHA "Top 50 Priority Tests and Panels for SPIA Adoption", see discussion. The list of ADHA Top 50 Priority Tests that this application uses is sourced from the RCPA SPIA e-Requesting resources dated April 2025.
As part of development work on the RCPA Standardisation of Pathology Informatics in Australia (RCPA SPIA), the Pathology Informatics Pilot Project (PI Pilot) developed the collection of Terminology Reference Sets which define the SNOMED Codes, RCPA Preferred Terms and other attributed of the orderable tests which are expected to be used for identifying tests for which results are to be provided in Australia. The NPAAC RCICR5 document explicitly refers the RCPA SPIA resources as sources of the terminologies to be used.
The terminology sets data is available from the National Clinical Terminology Service (NCTS), see references below.
This data has been used to develop this application with the explicit intention to support the pathology industry Australia in the effort to standardise the use of clinical terms in pathology ordering and reporting.
The RCPA resources available from NCTS include the release notes, terminology reference sets and information models.
Terminology Set sources are available in NCTS under RCPA Resources
